Nehemiah’s wall

Bible history

About 445/444 BC

Jerusalem’s walls are rebuilt

In the twentieth year of Artaxerxes, Nehemiah receives permission to go to Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:1–8). After inspecting the damaged walls, he organizes the work. Chapters 3–6 describe the workers, opposition and completion. Nehemiah 6:15 states that the wall was finished in fifty-two days.

World history

447–432 BC

Athens builds the Parthenon

During this same general period, Athens was building the Parthenon on the Acropolis. It was dedicated in 438 BC, with the larger construction and sculptural programme extending from 447 to 432 BC. Its scale and decoration expressed Athens’s civic and religious life.

About these dates

Time within this event: 52 days for the wall work, as stated in Nehemiah 6:15. This is not the length of the entire book or the journey from the Persian court. The Athens comparison places the rebuilding in a wider chronology; no contact between these projects is claimed.
Identifying this Artaxerxes with Artaxerxes I places Nehemiah’s arrival conventionally around 445 or 444 BC. The BC year is reconstructed; the biblical text itself specifies the king’s twentieth year. The dates concern the events, not the date when the whole book was written.
