What does the Bible say about rest and Sabbath?

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
From the very beginning, God established a rhythm of work and rest. Genesis 2:2-3 records that on the seventh day God ended His work and rested. He did not rest because He was tired — He rested to establish a pattern and declare that rest is sacred.

The Sabbath in the Old Testament

The fourth commandment instructed Israel to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy (Exodus 20:8-10). It was a weekly reminder that God is the provider — not human effort alone.

Jesus and the Sabbath

Jesus honoured the Sabbath but challenged legalistic rules. He said, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath" (Mark 2:27).

The Sabbath Principle Today

Most Christians understand that Christ fulfilled the law (Romans 10:4). However, the principle remains vital: human beings need regular rest, and refusing to rest is often misplaced trust.

Why Rest Matters

Rest declares trust in God. Taking time off says God can handle the world without your help for a day. Rest restores the soul. Psalm 23 says He maketh me to lie down and He restoreth my soul. Rest protects relationships. Constant busyness erodes connection with God, family, and community.
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
Rest is not optional — it is a gift from God. Your worth is found in Christ, not in your productivity.
