This is perhaps the most asked and most difficult question in theology. The Bible does not give us a tidy, complete explanation for every instance of suffering. But it offers truths that provide a framework.

Suffering Entered Through Sin

God created a world that was very good (Genesis 1:31). Suffering entered through the fall — the rebellion of humanity against God (Romans 5:12). Much suffering results from human sin — war, injustice, abuse.

God Can Use Suffering for Good

Romans 8:28 promises God works all things together for good to them that love Him. Joseph told his brothers, "Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good" (Genesis 50:20).

Suffering Produces Growth

James 1:2-4 says the trying of your faith worketh patience. Suffering can deepen faith and build character that prosperity cannot.

God Is Present in Suffering

Psalm 23:4 says even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me. God never promises a pain-free life but promises His presence.

God Himself Suffered

The most profound answer is the cross. God entered into human pain. Jesus suffered rejection, betrayal, torture, and death. Hebrews 4:15 says He was tempted in all points like as we are.

Suffering Is Temporary

Revelation 21:4 promises God shall wipe away all tears. There will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.
