The teenage years bring unique joys and challenges for Christian parents. While the Bible does not use the word "teenager," its principles speak powerfully to this stage of parenting.

Stay Connected

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 instructs parents to talk about God's commands in every setting of daily life. With teenagers, this means being present and available — even when they seem to pull away. Stay engaged in their world. Ask questions. Listen more than you lecture.

Grant Increasing Responsibility

Luke 16:10 teaches, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much." As teens demonstrate maturity and trustworthiness, gradually extend their freedom and responsibility. This prepares them for adulthood.

Be Honest About Your Own Struggles

Teenagers can spot hypocrisy quickly. Being transparent about your own faith journey — including doubts, failures, and God's faithfulness through it all — creates an atmosphere of authenticity.

Address Identity and Worth

Teenagers wrestle deeply with identity. Point them to the truth that they are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and that their identity is found in Christ, not in peer approval, appearance, or achievement.

Maintain Boundaries with Grace

Boundaries remain important during the teen years, but the way they are communicated should mature along with the child. Involve teens in discussions about rules and expectations. Help them understand the purpose behind boundaries.

Pray Relentlessly

Perhaps the most important thing any parent of a teenager can do is pray. Pray for their safety, their friendships, their faith, their future. Trust that God loves your teen even more than you do. The teenage years are not a problem to survive — they are an opportunity to walk alongside a young person as they begin owning their faith.
