Forgiveness is one of the most central themes in Scripture because it stands at the heart of the gospel itself.

God's Forgiveness Is the Foundation

Ephesians 1:7 declares we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace. Psalm 103:12 says as far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions. God's forgiveness is complete.

Forgiveness Is Commanded

Ephesians 4:32 instructs: "Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." Jesus added that if we do not forgive others, the Father will not forgive us (Matthew 6:14-15).

Forgiveness Has No Limit

When Peter suggested forgiving seven times, Jesus replied seventy times seven (Matthew 18:22). Forgiveness is a lifestyle, not a transaction with a cap.

What Forgiveness Is and Is Not

Forgiveness is releasing the desire for revenge and entrusting justice to God (Romans 12:19). It is not saying what happened was acceptable. It is choosing not to hold the offense against the person. It is not necessarily restoring trust immediately. It is possible even when the other person does not apologize.

"For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." — Matthew 6:14 (KJV)

Forgiveness sets us free — not because the offender deserves it, but because Christ has set the pattern and given us grace to follow.
