Human beings are created for relationship. Scripture gives us beautiful examples of deep friendship — David and Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, Paul and Timothy.

Qualities of Godly Friendship

Honesty. Proverbs 27:6 says faithful are the wounds of a friend. True friends speak truth even when uncomfortable. Loyalty. Proverbs 17:17 declares a friend loveth at all times and a brother is born for adversity. Real friendship is tested in hardship. Mutual encouragement. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says two are better than one — if either falls, one can help the other up. Spiritual sharpening. Proverbs 27:17 — iron sharpeneth iron, so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. Sacrifice. Jesus defined the highest friendship: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13).

Choosing Friends Wisely

1 Corinthians 15:33 warns evil communications corrupt good manners. While Christians should love everyone, our closest friendships should encourage our walk with God.

"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour." — Ecclesiastes 4:9 (KJV)

Invest in friendships that point you toward Christ. Be that kind of friend for others.
