What does the Bible say about anxiety and worry?

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
Anxiety is one of the most common human experiences. The Bible addresses it with both compassion and instruction.

Jesus Addressed Anxiety

In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus told followers not to worry about life, pointing to the birds and lilies as evidence of God's provision: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Paul's Prescription

Philippians 4:6-7 says be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God shall keep your hearts and minds.

Is Feeling Anxious Sinful?

Experiencing anxious feelings is a normal human response. Even Jesus experienced anguish in Gethsemane (Luke 22:44). Anxiety becomes problematic when we choose to dwell in worry rather than turning to God.

Practical Steps

Pray immediately. Turn anxious thoughts into prayers rather than letting them spiral. Speak truth to yourself. Counter anxious thoughts with God's promises. Limit inputs that fuel anxiety. Be intentional about media consumption (Philippians 4:8). Practice gratitude daily. Gratitude and anxiety have difficulty coexisting. Seek help when needed. Persistent anxiety may have a clinical component. Seeking counsel is wisdom, not lack of faith.
"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." — 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
God's Word does not shame the anxious — it meets them with compassion and offers a path toward peace.
