How can broken trust be rebuilt in a relationship?

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7 (KJV)
Trust is the foundation of every healthy relationship. When it is shattered, rebuilding it is one of the hardest things two people can do. But it is possible with God's help.

For the One Who Broke Trust

Take full ownership. Do not minimize or blame-shift. Proverbs 28:13 says confession leads to mercy. Accept the consequences. Galatians 6:7 reminds us we reap what we sow. Accept lost privileges and increased accountability patiently. Be consistently transparent. Volunteer information. Answer questions openly. Over time, consistent transparency rebuilds what was broken. Demonstrate change through actions. James 2:17 says faith without works is dead. The same applies to promises of change.

For the One Whose Trust Was Broken

Allow yourself to grieve. Broken trust is a real loss. Choose forgiveness as a process. You can forgive while still requiring demonstrated trustworthiness over time. Set clear expectations. Communicate what you need. Boundaries are protection, not punishment. Watch for fruit of repentance. John the Baptist told the Pharisees to bring forth fruits meet for repentance (Matthew 3:8).

For Both Parties

Rebuilding trust requires patience, prayer, and often professional help. There will be setbacks. But when two people rely on God's grace, broken relationships can become stronger than before.
"Behold, I make all things new." — Revelation 21:5 (KJV)
