How do I hear God's voice?
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13 (KJV)
One of the most common questions Christians ask is how to discern God's voice in their daily lives. While God can certainly speak however He chooses, Scripture highlights several primary ways He communicates with His people.
Through His Word
The Bible is God's primary and most reliable means of communication. Hebrews 4:12 describes Scripture as "quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword." When we read the Bible, we are hearing from God directly. Any other impression or prompting we sense must be measured against what Scripture already reveals.Through the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide believers into all truth (John 16:13). The Spirit works in our hearts to convict us of sin, prompt us toward obedience, bring Scripture to mind, and give us a sense of peace or unease about decisions. Romans 8:14 says, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."Through Wise Counsel
Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." God often speaks through mature believers, pastors, and mentors who can offer biblical wisdom and perspective.Through Circumstances
While circumstances alone are not a reliable guide, God can use open and closed doors in combination with His Word and the Spirit to direct our steps (Proverbs 16:9).Through Prayer
